Part III is the 5 day Remote EMT course

The Remote & Expedition Emergency Medical Technician program is designed for anyone wishing to provide advanced medical skills outside of the hospital setting. The REMT covers city based medicine and is a certified EMT-B course, but focuses on aspects of providing medical care in remote, austere, and wilderness environments. The course covers prolonged remote care, wilderness wound management, wilderness trauma management, common and simple injuries sustained in remote environments, and additional topics in Remote Medicine.

Remote EMT vs. Wilderness EMT

There are many organisations who offer the Wilderness Emergency Medical Technicians course.  In the United States the main ones are NOLS, WMA, and RMI. All of these courses are going to give the student a profound level of instruction and hands on experience.

The main difference between the Wilderness EMT and Remote EMT is this: the WEMT is geared towards rescue personnel and assumes that you will have eventual access to advanced medical care and within hours have the casualty in the hospital.

For the Remote EMT, the training assumes that YOU are the entire medical establishment. You are the only medically trained responder that the casualty will have for many days. In Remote and Austere Medicine, the practitioner has to be able to provide highly effective and often long term medical care.

Remote Medicine Training

If you are interested in learning remote medicine, then the Remote EMT course is the place to start. During this programme you will be taught how to provide medical care for your casualty without the luxury of a lot of medical gear and equipment. It will be your wits and your knowledge that can save a life. This course is designed for people who will be far out of reach of the medical system. This could be during long term expeditions, while living in third world countries, or in the aftermath of a devastating natural disaster.

At the end of this Remote EMT course, if you desire for further and more advanced medical training, then the Remote Medical Practitioner course will be the next logical step.
