This course provides advanced medical training suitable for paramedics, wilderness EMTs, first responders, first aiders, nurses and anyone providing medical care in remote or austere environments.
Topics for this course include:
- Suturing lecture and lab
- Tourniquet lab and scenario
- Burn treatment scenario
- Realistic wounding scenario
- Anaphylaxis scenario and injection lab
- Cricothyriodotomy lecture and lab
- Needle decompression for collapsed lung lecture and lab
This course gives students hands on training using pig skin and pig feet for some of these demonstrations. For the burn treatment and massive bleeding demonstration and scenario students will be asked to take turns being the patient and have moulage makeup applied to give realism to the training. For the needle injection lab students will use training aids to learn proper depth and techniques for the intermuscular injections. Much of this course was based on the Combat Lifesaver Course found in military medicine.
This course teaches advanced medical procedures that require a medical director or doctor to legally use these skills. This course does not give any certification that will allow students to practise medicine or any advanced medical skills.
The course is mainly conducted outdoors near Cahersiveen in County Kerry. For the some of this class you will be outside and active.
PREQUISITE: Outdoor First Aid or equivalent.
